According to the information forwarded by an unnamed insider at the Walt Disney Co, a new technology, code-named Keychest, may be unveiled by the studio in about two months. The technology, using cloud-computing, will enable consumers to access movies on any device - including cell phones and computers, rather than only TVs and DVDs.

Marking a momentous shift in what owning a movie or a TV show means for the consumers, the Keychest technology would essentially redefine possession as access rights, and not a physical ownership alone.

With the new technology, likely to be available to the consumers in 2010, consumers will be required to pay only one price for permanent access to a movie or TV show on a number of digital platforms and devices, including the Web, mobile gadgets, and cable services, provided that they offer the on-demand viewing option. The technology will also help the consumers avail other services like online movie subscriptions.

Technically speaking, the Keychest process creates a system whereby a unique "key" is generated and stored in the repository when a consumer purchases a movie. The Keychest- participating distribution services automatically query the repository to check what movies the consumer has paid for.

Noting that the Keychest will essentially blend multiple digital platforms and devices, the studio insider, remarked: "Packaged goods will co-exist with digital platforms. That's what this is about!"
