Lung Cancer Death on a Rise among Women - NHS

Recent figures posted by the NHS have revealed that in Scotland, the number of women dying from lung cancer is steadily on the rise. A study of updated figures of Cancer Mortality Statistics show that this is in sharp contrast to death from other types of cancers, the numbers of which are thankfully going down.

A study of the data of past 10 years revealed that while lung cancer deaths in mean had gone down by 21%, an increase of 11% was seen in the case of women. In order to ensure that the number of cancer deaths go down, the Scottish Government has been trying to promote healthy life choices.

While the number of deaths by lung cancer went up, that of, as per the 10 year data, overall cancer deaths went down 12% for mean and 5% in the case of women.

The increased rise in deaths from lung cancer is being viewed as a result of the growing number of smoking population, most of which, if the statistics are to be believed, are women. The Scottish Government spokeswoman assured, "These health inequalities are unacceptable and we are tackling them on a number of fronts. For example, we are taking a wide range of measures to combat excess drinking, making cigarettes less attractive and less available to young people, and encouraging other healthy lifestyle choices".
