Starting November 1, the flight taxes will be increase of up to £55 on an economy class ticket. Followed by the new 2009 budget system announced by government in April, the latest Air Passenger Duty (APD) will attract the higher tax levels.
Claiming that latest APD is a green measure, intended to cover the environmental cost of aviation by the Government; opponent shout that it is no more than a mystery tax. The passengers planning for short time trips will have to face the huge change in their financial planning, since APD on flights of less than 2,000 miles will be £11 on a return flight in economy class and £22 in premium classes. Band B is £45 in economy and £90 in premium. Band C is £50 in economy class and £100 in premium, and Band D £55 in economy and £110 in premium.
The Association of British Travel Agents accused the huge tax increase in the premium economy classes and stated, "For those paying out for a little extra leg room in premium economy these tax increases will be double, taking this service, introduced to allow a bit more comfort at an affordable price, out of the range of many travelers".
The airline industry depicts a massive loss of the professional and holiday maker passengers and therefore doubting the Government objective, the Passenger groups are concerned to know the actual usage of the amount retrieved.
Additionally affirmed, "Treasury figures show that aviation is under taxed by £10 billion, because it pays neither VAT nor fuel tax", said Stephen Joseph, executive director of the Campaign for Better Transport.
