Industrial Minister Tony Clement on Friday said that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission's decision, which has prevented one of the largest cellphone companies, Globalive, from setting up shops across Canada, will be thoroughly reviewed.
“We are examining the CRTC decision very closely, and certainly we are still very much in favor of more competition in the telecom space for Canadian consumers", Clement said. "That’s why we opened up these contracts to other new entrants". Saying that Globalive's proposal is not in line with what Canada requires of foreign entries, CRTC advised the company to bring its "corporate structure" more in tune with what the Canadian law requires, without giving any specifications.
Chief Executive of Globalive Anthony Lacavera said that while he was "greatly disappointed" with the decision passed by CRTC, this was certainly not the "end of the line" for his firm. "Neither I nor Mr. Sawiris have ever given up on anything", he said.
Orascom Telecom, Egypt based telecommunications giant, which currently holds almost all of Globalive's $600 Million debt, said that Globalive had it complete support. Lacavera, who finds the whole situation "frustrating", is optimistic that Clement's reviewing will help.
