One of the largest and top ranked sandwich chains, Pret a Manger, which earlier claimed that it only used fresh meat for its products, and now admitted to getting chicken imported from Brazil, an admission for which the chain has now gotten into much trouble. Meat for the firm's 'Just Made' chicken sandwiches, contrary to their name, is produced in Brazil, frozen and shipped to UK. In all the said products come from some 6,000 miles away.
Until Pret made significant changes to its website, there was no attempt in anyways from the company to clarify its stance. A similar finding was made last week, when investigations revealed that Sushi being sold as "spankingly fresh" by Pret is made from fish which is shipped in from nearly 7,000 miles away.
In its defense, Pret has said that the reason it gets chicken imported from Brazil is because the birds are reared in better conditions there than they are in Britain. The ?200million-a-year company has now come under a lot of questions. Further actions from both the company and the authorities are yet awaited.
