A recent survey conducted by Girlguiding UK has discovered that after the age of 10, many girls feel that they need to change the way they look. Girls as young as 10 years want to be thinner, and nearly 50% of girls between the age of 11 to 16 admitted that they diet regularly and watch what they eat to stay thin.
A total of 1,109 girls and women were interviewed for the sake of the survey, falling between the age groups of 7 to 21, on topics like binge eating, eating disorders, sexual health and body image. The survey revealed that while 24% of 16 to 21 year olds would seriously consider plastic surgery, 12% of 11 to 16 year olds have no qualms in considering a gastric band. 5% of the girls interviewed admitted to thinking about Botox.
Also, the survey found out that in the 7-11 age group, 2% were not happy with the way they looked, a number which rose to 11% in the 11-16 group. Researchers have noticed a major shift in the way girls look at themselves creeps in at the age of 10.
Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson shared, "This report highlights the worrying number of teenage girls who are going on extreme diets or even considering cosmetic surgery because they're unhappy with the way they look. "
Airbrushed models all over advertisements are being held responsible for influencing young girls by putting forward body images which are unattainable in real life. The survey's results have managed to sound a warning bell among authorities and parents.
