Report: Apple to launch “worldmode” hybrid iPhone for all carriers in Q3 2010
Apple

According to an AppleInsider-reported analyst research note from OTR Global, Apple's currently-under-development UTMS/CDMA hybrid iPhone will enable the company to sell one single "worldmode" iPhone handset to all carriers, particularly to Verizon Wireless in the US, in the third quarter next year.

Based on supposed leaks from Apple's Taiwan handset supply chain, the report has specified that the mentioned hybrid device will be offered in the US via the UTMS 3G-network from AT&T, as well as the bigger yet older CDMA network from Verizon.

In addition, while the "worldmode" chip of the new hybrid iPhone will be developed by Qualcomm, the device will be manufactured by the Asustek subsidiary, Pegatron; instead of the present iPhone manufacturer Hon Hai.

The Qualcomm CDMA/WCDMA chip will resolve the issue of network fractionalization, allowing a single, global iPhone to take to any major carrier the world over. Moreover, it will also eliminate the potential confusion that the users would have faced if Apple sold the iPhone's CDMA and GSM/UMTS versions separately.

The research note also stated that the new hybrid iPhone will be comparatively smaller than the existing iPhone - it will have a 2.8-inch screen, which is notably smaller than the existing iPhone's
3.5-inch screen. This news has also been further substantiated by a Chinese-language newspaper which reported that a forthcoming model of the iPhone will be smaller as well as lighter.
