Plugging "one of the biggest leaks" in software piracy this year, online investigation firm IPCybercrime has been able to pin down an eighteen-year-old person named Christian Del Amo, for allegedly attempting to sell pirated copies of Activision Blizzard's forthcoming game, Modern Warfare 2, which is scheduled for an official release on November 10.
It was on October 30 that Activision hired IPCybercrime to investigate the suspicious posts on Craigslist, which advertised that Xbox 360 bundles of Modern Warfare 2 were for sale.
Going by the indications from the posts in the piracy forums on xbox360iso. com, Del Amo had likely obtained a copy of Modern Warfare 2 and cracked the copy protection during the past weekend; and, subsequently, advertised the sale of the pirated digital copies on the torrent sites.
After a series of sting operations, which the investigators carried out on social networking sites, along with the examination of the user posts in online piracy forums, Rob Holmes' IPCybercrime was finally able to detect the involvement of Del Amo in the pirating operation. As a result of the investigations, the Miami-Dade police officers arrested Del Amo yesterday.
The investigations also revealed that earlier too Del Amo had been involved in the online sales of pirated-software-equipped modified Xbox 360 hard drives -he offered a 250GB Western Digital hard drive, loaded with 125 pirated games, for a mere $150!
