The Cray XT5 supercomputer known as "Jaguar" has bagged the title of world’s fastest computer.
According to the TOP500 Organization, AMD-powered Jaguar outshined IBM’s Roadrunner to be named as the most powerful supercomputer in the world.
Jaguar supercomputer at Oak Ridge outperformed Roadrunner by showing that it could process 1.759 petaflops per second. IBM’s Roadrunner, which could show a processing speed of 1.042 petaflops per second, was pushed back to second position.
It should be noted here that a petaflop means 1,000 trillion calculations per second.
Jaguar, which is based on the Cray XT5 Linux supercomputer platform, has a peak capability of processing 2.3 petaflops per second.
Jaguar is based in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, while Roadrunner is based at the Los Alamos National Laboratory of the US Department of Energy in New Mexico.
It should be noted here that a petaflop means 1,000 trillion calculations per second.
