Dr. Jacobo Joffe, a 59-year-old general surgeon, pleaded no contest to the charges of having sexual relations with his patients and using illicit drugs with them. The Toronto surgeon, specialist in bariatric surgery, took "advantage of the patients' vulnerable position" and sexually abused his patients for over a decade.
"I went to him to help me make my life better, to help me transform, and he destroyed my trust," said one of the patients, who attended the proceedings and could be identified only as Patient D.
The doctor performed gastroplasty on Patient D in 1999. During the follow up visits he had sexual and oral sex with the patient at Scarborough Hospital.
There were also allegations against the doctor for using illicit drugs with twin sisters who were his patients.
David Macklin, director of Weightcare weight management clinics says that obese patients often struggle with "false and negative thoughts," and a physician's role is to provide an antidote to those thoughts.
The CPSO placed a restriction on his license, prohibiting him from engaging in any professional encounters with female patients without the presence of a monitor.
