Heavy drinking in men ‘good for heart’- study
Heavy drinking

A new finding suggests that heavy drinking in men may cut down the risk of heart disease by almost a third in men as per s new study despite the health campaigners have warned that this finding should be cautiously treated.

Research in Spain on individuals aged between 29 and 69 revealed that the consumption of alcohol could prevent heart disease in men irrespective of the quantity or the kind of alcohol consumed.

The study also found that it does not have a noticeable effect in women. The study was published in the journal ‘Heart’ and analyzed about 41,000 people.

There is previous evidence about the beneficial effect of alcohol with moderate consumption. The study, however, suggests that drinking too much quantity or more than moderate volumes also protects.

Health experts, however, warned that heavy drinking can damage other organs and lead to premature death.

The participants were questioned during the study by Spanish researchers on their drinking habits and the quantity of alcohol that they consumed in 12 months.

They were classified as those who were teetotalers, former drinkers, low drinkers, moderate drinkers, high drinkers and very high drinkers.

The results showed that moderate male drinkers could reduce their risk by 51 percent, high drinkers by 54 percent and very high drinkers by 50 percent.

The study should not be treated as definitive as per health experts.
