An announcement was made by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), show a decrease in the number of gay and bisexual men diagnosed with HIV in the UK last year.
However new analysis suggests a high number of new infections are still happening among gay and bisexual men in the UK. 33,000 gay men are living with HIV in the UK.
Deborah Jack, Chief Executive of the National AIDS Trust, however puts the figures into context and says that the number of new HIV cases among gay and bisexual men was low last year which is good news but it is important to keep in mind the all-time high in 2007.
There are a record number of gay and bisexual men living with HIV in the UK even after the number of new cases has reduced. A total of nearly 9,000 out of the 33,300 are currently undiagnosed.
Experts are saying that late diagnosis is the main cause behind this.
"The level of undiagnosed HIV in the country is completely unacceptable. With early diagnosis and effective treatment, most people with HIV can live to old age. If left undiagnosed, they will die earlier, be significantly more ill and more likely to infect others. HIV testing is easy, quick and saves lives," said Nick Patridge, Chief Executive of Terrace Higgins Trust.
