Bacterial Meningitis Detected in Wakefield Teacher
Bacterial Meningitis

A middle school teacher in Wakefield has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. After being informed about the teachers’ sickness, nurses and school administrators at the Galvin Middle School identified students and staff who may have had close contact with the unidentified patient.

On Saturday night, 39 parents of students and one staff member were called to inform them of their exposure.

A ‘reverse 911’ call notification was sent to parents about the situation and the staff members at the school were also called and told about the circumstances.

The patients remained hospitalized in serious condition and the school was given an extra day for cleaning.

Bacterial meningitis can be described as an inflammation of the membranes which cover the brain and the spinal cord.

This condition could be very severe and may result in brain damage, hearing loss or learning disabilities.
