Reports of Sick Cats Leads Company to Announce Recall of Cat Food

Missouri based Diamond Pet Foods has recalled certain bags of its dried cat food, marketed as Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball, after receiving reports of as many 21 sick cats. As per the company, the cat food had been distributed in various states in " the South and along the East Coast".

The recall happened in September after the company discovered that its cat food could lead to cats developing gastrointestinal or neurological problems. It reportedly does not contain enough Thiamine, which is an essential nutrient for felines. Cats solely on this food are at an increased risk of developing thiamine deficiency. If untreated, this disorder could cause a cat's death.

On Tuesday, the company updated its information on the September recall to report that a total of 21 cases have been confirmed from New York and Pennsylvania alone, and the cat food was distributed in as many as 21 states.

"Initial symptoms of thiamine deficiency include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. Later, neurological problems that could develop include bending the neck toward the floor, wobbly walking, circling, falling and seizures", it has been shared.

On September 23, the affected cat food was pulled off the shelves from all the states, and the company has confirmed that no incidents have been reported since October 19.
