Air Canada Shares Plans of Making Second Checked Bag Chargeable

Air Canada, the nation's biggest airline, has been trying to cut corners and make the most of every opportunity to make up for all the losses that were caused during the global economic slump, and under a new development which seems to be a step in the same direction, the carrier has announced plans to charge for second checked bags on "U. S. trans-border and transatlantic flights".      As per the airline's plans, customers opting to travel by economy class, i. e., on Tango, Tango Plus and Latitude fares, will still be able to check in an additional bag for free over the carry-on luggage.

"This change in baggage policy to match our U. S. and European competitors is an important step as we work toward sustained profitability. In this weak economy it is more critical than ever to continue reviewing all our activities on a regular basis and making adjustments as necessary to remain competitive with our industry peers", shared Ben Smith, Air Canada's Executive Vice- President and Chief Commercial Officer.

Starting January 19, checking of a second baggage would cost flyers $30 on "U. S. trans-border flights" and $50 on flights "to and from Europe and Israel". While these charges will be applicable to Hawaii flights, Puerto Rico travelers have been exempted.
