In a late Friday blog post, Google said that its customized Web search results service has now been extended even to those people who search its site, but have otherwise not signed into a Google account.
Till now, the search results customization, based on a user’s earlier search history and clicks, was only being availed by those has logged into the Google service.
For years, the search results’ customization service has involved Google’s track of a user’s Web search history for up to 180 days. As per Google, an anonymous cookie in the user’s browser helps track the search queries and the results that have been most frequently clicked on by the user.
For availing the tailored results that essentially result in improving ad targeting, users will now have to click the “view customizations” link appearing on the top right of the search results page. The link features all the requisite details pertaining to how the results have been customized as well as how the feature – which is now an ‘opt-out’ instead of the earlier ‘opt-in’ - can be turned off.
Commenting on the Google decision to extend personalized search to all, Google spokesman Nathan Tyler said: “Our goal is to provide relevant search results. The benefits that we’ve seen for signed-in users were so great we want to extend those same benefits to everyone.”
