A rocket bundled with an Air Force Satellite, the Wideband Global SATCOM3, which will be used by the military for its operations, was launched from Cape Canaveral on Saturday evening. Two earlier attempts of the launch were disrupted due to thick clouds, heavy rains and a system issue.
The latest launch comes as the last in a series of three satellites which will be used by the military specifically for strategic purposes.
The first satellite in the series was launched last year, and oversees the Pacific Ocean, while the second one, which was sent off earlier his year, covers the Indian Ocean, and is particularly used by officers and commanders in Afghanistan and Iraq, in addition to other Southwest Asian regions.
"The WGS provides a giant leap in communications bandwidth and technology. The launch of this satellite is another example of the Air Force bringing important and vital capabilities to our nation's military around the world", said Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley.
The SATCOM3 will be positioned to overlook the Eastern Atlantic Ocean.
