Zenn Motor Company

Toronto based electric car makers Zenn Motor Company, on Monday announced its plans of ceasing operations and production at its Quebec unit, which makes low-speed vehicles, by April 2010 end.

As confirmed by the firm, the Zenn LSV 2010 will be the last electric car model that will be produced by the plant, as it now plans to shift its focus more on the ZENNergy drive solutions product.

April will be the last month of operation for the St. Jerome unit, which currently employs 11 workers. "We are now firmly evolving from a manufacturer vehicle to a Tier 1 supplier", spokeswoman Catherine Scrimgeour said.

Zenn had shared its plans of moving the company's focus to commercialization of its drive solution products with a growing interest for electric vehicles in the auto industry in September, and the product which is now the center of all focus "provides smaller, lighter, longer-lasting and less expensive energy storage for electric cars".

As confirmed by the firm's Chief Executive Ian Clifford, the 11 workers of the unit which is to be closed down will either be offered jobs at other plants or laid off.
