Making the most of low market prices, United Airlines on Tuesday shared that it has placed an order of worth over $10 Billion for as many as 50 new wide-bodied jetliners. The order has been divided between Airbus and Boeing, and the development is being viewed as the carrier's way of pulling down fuel costs and emissions.
As confirmed by the company, the order has called for 25 of Boeing's 787 Dreamliners, and 25 of Airbus A350 planes, following a contest that lasted for 6 months. UA also has future purchase rights for 50 of each of the aforementioned airplanes.
"We obviously thought the current environment was an opportunity for us. We resisted the pressure during the up cycle to buy during the 'while supplies last' market environment and had the patience to wait until we saw this opportunity. We feel much rewarded by that", said United Airlines President John Tague.
UA, which is America's third-largest carrier, has shared that its order has managed to capitalize well on lower prices, as both Boeing and Airbus are struggling to survive as a result of the immense hurt that has been experienced by them as a result of the economic downturn. The purchase has been listed as one of the biggest aircraft deals since the recession started.
While details on financing have not been shared by the giant carrier, it did say that both the manufactures have provided apt financing for the purchase.
