Reaching a settlement of $750,000 with Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre for accidentally overdosing their newborn twins in 2007, Dennis Quaid and wife Kimberly's agreement is pending approval in a Los Angeles court.
The result of extensive negotiations between both parties and their respective legal representatives, the agreement is intended to avoid waste of time, needles expense and litigation uncertainty.
Two weeks after their birth, twins Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace born via gestational carrier, were given an accidental though life threatening overdose of blood thinning drug - Heparin, due to which the babies spent days battling for their life. Being treated for staph infections, a hospital employee accidentally gave them heparin (commonly used to flush out I. V. s), dosages that were 1,000-times the recommended amounts for newborns, 10,000 units per millileter apiece instead of the standard 10. Since, the twins recovered and aged one, seem to be in good health.
As well, a $25,000 fine has been slapped on Cedars-Sinai by the California Department of Public Health that the facility fully intends to pay. Since, the hospital has not only apologized to the patients' families, but has also promised to take steps to train staff better.
In addition, the Quaids are also suing Baxter Healthcare Corp., the maker of Heparin, on grounds of negligence in packaging adult and paediatric doses in similar looking vials, including poorly labels. The Cedars-Sinai settlement will not affect the lawsuit against the Heparin drug maker.
