World's First Networks to Use LTE Technology Opened by TeliaSonera

TeliaSonera, the Nordic carrier, on Monday deployed in Oslo and Sotckholm, what it says are the world's first two commercial network making the most the LTE wireless technology. The maximum speed that the networks claim are a whopping 100Mbit per second.

Earlier the operator had announced that the networks would be opened in 2010, but the deadline has been beaten by a whole 17 days by the company. More wide-scale deployment of LTE is expected to roll in by around 2012, with telecom operators expected to spend billions of Euros to get their hands on the next generation network.

As of now, there are no LTE phones available, and TeliaSonera has been using Samsung's data cards for the launch. The network technology has been supplied by the Swedish giant Ericsson for the Stockholm area and the Oslo network has been taken care of by China's Huawei.

"We are very proud to be the first operator in the world to offer our customers 4G services. The use of mobile broadband in the Nordic countries is exploding and customers need higher speeds and capacity. This is why we [have launched] 4G services in both Stockholm and Oslo", said Kenneth Karlberg, President and Head of Mobility Services at TeliaSonera.
