With the aim of publicly shaming AT&T for its much-rued 3G wireless service coverage and bandwidth consumption that irks iPhone users no end, the unleashing of the ‘Operation Chokehold’ mock campaign may potentially have AT&T iPhone subscribers ‘flooding’ the carrier’s data network with heavy data traffic this Friday!
The campaign, initiated by satirical blogger Dan Lyons, alias Fake Steve Jobs, will apparently devastate AT&T’s data network, as multitudes of iPhone subscribers would simultaneously switch on the bandwidth-consuming apps on Friday afternoon.
Lyons embarked upon ‘Operation Chokehold’ by posting a fake ‘memo’ on Monday, claiming that it was written by Apple employees who urged iPhone users to “turn on a data intensive app and run that app for one solid hour”, in an attempt to deliver a massive blow to AT&T’s 3G wireless network.
The memo went thus: “We will attempt to overwhelm the AT&T data network and bring it to its knees. Send the message to AT&T that we are sick of their substandard network and sick of their abusive comments.”
Meanwhile, wireless experts opine that the endeavor may not have any adverse effect on the legitimate users, other than annoying them.
Steve Beauregard - president of mobility solution provider Regard Solutions, Santa Monica, California - said that it is unlikely that ‘Operation Chokehold’ will lead to a denial of service situation on AT&T’s “distributed” data network.
