Findings of a latest study, reached at after extensive trial, have revealed that women are generally more prone to wrinkles, especially in the perioral area, more specifically around the lips. As compared to men, women tend to display more, and prominent, wrinkles.
For the sake of research, Dr. Emma C. Paes, the lead researcher, and colleagues utilized skin surface replicas of 10 male and 10 female corpses, all between the ages of 75 and 93. After carefully analyzing the samples using "dermaTOP blue three-dimensional digitizing system", which is a 3D technology which helps in apt analysis of roughness or smoothness of human skin, the researchers concluded that "women exhibited more and deeper wrinkles in the perioral region than their male counterparts".
The disadvantage that women's skin displays has been suspected for very long, but for the first time ever, a study has been able to provide "irrefutable scientific evidence", said Dr. Foad Nahai, a plastic surgeon practicing in Atlanta.
"We had always had the impression that male skin doesn't age as rapidly as female skin. What we didn't know, and this study points out, is that one of the reasons that lines are deeper in women is because they have fewer sweat or sebaceous glands", Dr. Nahai said.
The study has been published by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
