Vicks Dayquil packaging not child-proof, packs recalled

Procter & Gamble Co. recalled about 700,000 packs of Vicks DayQuil cold medicine after finding that the packaging was not childproof, the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported.

The medicine that was sold between September 2008 and December 2009 and this step affects Vicks Dayquil Cold & Flu 24-Count Bonus Pack Liquicaps with the UPC no. 3 23900 01087 1.

Consumers can identify the product by the yellow flag in the top-right corner that reads: Bonus 20 Percent More.

“If a child swallows several pills then the child could suffer serious health problems or death," the commission was reported saying.

No injuries however have been reported till now of this nature.

People who bought the product have been given an option of requesting a refund or coupon from Proctor and Gamble Co. by calling them at 800-251-3374.

P&G spokeswoman Crystal Harrell said the problem was discovered during a routine assessment of company’s packaging.

Vicks formula was found containing a pain reliever acetaminophen and fever reducer; dextromethorphan, a cough supressant; doxylamine, an antihistamine and pseudoephrine, a decongestant.

On Friday the shares of Procter & Gamble fell 75 cents to $60.84 in afternoon trading.
