A young musician due to a suspected drug overdose died and his friend was reported fighting for life. The incident happened in a hotel room in Hong Kong. The musicians were with an Australian youth orchestra.
News Ltd says 21-year-old Joseph Daniel Hall and Andrew Williams were found unconscious in a hotel room early yesterday morning. Both were 21.
The two musicians were rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kowloon, where Hall was declared bought dead and Williams remains in a critical.
The two had been on tour with one of the nation's finest classical music ensembles, the West Australian Youth Orchestra, for concerts in Singapore and Hong Kong.
An Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman confirmed death of a man from west Australia but could not provide further details.
Police said an autopsy would be conducted in Hong Kong on Monday before the body was returned to Perth.
WA Youth Music Association executive director Ben Burgess, who is on the tour, expressed shock over the incident and said the close-knit orchestra, was disturbed.
Some members of the group have already returned to Perth while others would follow soon and the group has cancelled the remainder of its tour.
