A 25-year-old woman, who was reported to be HIV-positive woman committed suicide today by jumping from the fourth floor of the School of Tropical Medicine (STM). Lakshami Samanta was admitted here for treatment.
Lakshmi's brother Sukhdeb and sister-in-law Rinku had got her to STM on Friday afternoon. Sources said that Lakshami sneaked out unnoticed and went to building's terrace from where she jumped.
Lakshami, a resident of Tarakeswar, Hooghly, married Rajendra a few years back. She went to Rajendra's ancestral home in Bihar months after marriage where she fell ill. She was found to be HIV-positive after being examined..
A senior police officer said, “Investigation says that the patient was suffering from depression as she HIV-positive. Family members of the victim alleged that she had transmitted the disease from her husband.”
Lakshami was abandoned by Rajinder after he came to know that she was HIV-positive. She returned to Tarakeswar and took shelter in Sukhdeb's shanty in the Manikpalli locality.
STM superintendent Tamal Kanti Ghosh said, "Lakshami was admitted here earlier also. We discharged her as her condition improved. This time, she came to us with meningitis, backache and fungal infection.”
