DisplayBank: LED-based LCD TV shipments to rise to 26 million next year

Going by the statistics forwarded by market research firm DisplayBank, the overall shipments of LED-backlit LCD TVs – launched by Sony in 2004 – jumped from a mere 200,000 units last year to a whopping 3.2 million units this year.

In its ‘LED LCD TV Roadmap and Market Forecast,’ DisplayBank has projected that the shipments of LED-backlit LCD TVs would increase manifold in the coming years – increasing more than eight times to almost 26 million in 2010; doubling from the 2010 figures to 51.9 million in 2011; leaping to 84.4 million in 2012; and to 129 million in 2013.

While LDE-backlit LCD TV shipments will account for nearly 16 percent of the total LCD TV shipments in 2010, their share will rise to a substantial over 61 percent of the overall LCD TV shipments by 2013.

The escalating popularity of LCD TVs with LED edge lighting technique or the LED backlit system largely results from their distinctly ‘slimmer’ and more compact appearance, in comparison to their regular LCD counterparts; as well as the introduction of big 40-50-inch models of these TVs this year.

According to DisplayBank’s senior analyst Allan Ji, almost all leading TV brands – including Sony, Samsung, LG, Sharp, Philips, Toshiba and Vizio – are aggressively targeting the LED-based LCD TVs market; and would expect to ship 20-30 percent of their LCD TVs with LED backlights in 2010.
