Digital Slang FML Ranks Number 1 in Facebook's Most Popular Words List

As per new data released by the company for the year 2009, the most popular and used word on Facebook, the top ranked social networking website, was the digital slang FML, which has hinted that the site is mostly used by students and youngsters, despite the fact that Facebook is continually trying to portray itself as an ideal tool for business.

Following in the footsteps of Twitter, Facebook has also released a list of top words and phrases that were used in users' status updates over the past year.

While Twitter makes sure that the ongoing trends and popular terms and topics are always available to users and are displayed on the homepage, Facebook is releasing a complete-year list and is calling it Facebook Memology.

"People now use it simply to express some frustration with an aspect of their lives. We'll leave the 'F' open to your interpretation, but the 'M' and 'L' stand for 'My Life'. The beginning of May appeared to be a seriously frustrating time for people, when students were busy with finals and the weather was rainy just before summer", explained Data scientist Lars Backstrom in a post on the company's official blog.

Actually, Facebook Applications topped the list and FML came in second, but this is only because the sites tend to group together word and phrases which are related to one another. Swine Flu was the second most used term.
