New rating released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have managed to take away almost all the guesswork involved in picking boosters which are most likely to give "good lap and shoulder belt fit in a range of vehicles". The institute has rated 9 boosters for belt-positioning as "Best Bets", and another 6 as "Good Bets" after thorough analysis of as many as 60 models currently available.
11 boosters, according to the group, are not recommended at all, under any circumstances because they do an utterly "poor" job of fitting the belt, and it has been stressed that fit is the most important factor as safety belts are designed keeping adults in mind and not kids.
The job of boosters is to elevate children so that safety belts that have actually been designed for adult manage to fit properly. As shared by the institution, the lap belt should "fit flat across a child's upper thighs, not across the soft abdomen, which is more likely to be injured in a crash than bony structures like the pelvis".
Among the Best Bets are Combi Dakota backless/clip, Recaro Young Sport, Recaro Vivo and Maxi-Cosi Rodi XR. Good Bets include Maxi-Cosi Rodi, Evenflo Symphony 65, Britax Parkway SG and Graco TurboBooster SafeSeat Wander, while boosters which have been slammed as not recommended include Evenflo Express, Eddie Bauer Deluxe, Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite, Evenflo Sightseer, Alpha Omega Elite and Eddie Bauer Deluxe 3-in-1.
