In a Wednesday announcement on the company's blog, Twitter said that it has taken over Mixer Labs - the company behind the creation of the GeoAPI location service that enables developers to build geolocation-aware application atop Twitter.
The news about Twitter's acquisition of Mixer Labs - the financial aspects of which remain undisclosed - comes after the company previewed expanded location support for developers in August; and launched a geotagging API for its service last month.
Noting that the Mixer Labs' acquisition will greatly enhance the geolocation services provided on the Twitter messaging service, Evan Williams, CEO of Twitter, elaborated that ""when current location is added to tweets, new and valuable services emerge--everything from breaking news to finding friends or local businesses can be dramatically enhanced."
As per Twitter, the Mixer Labs' singular software, using the GeoAPI service, will enable the Twitter users to tag the location from where a message has reached them. As such the Twitter users will not only be able to 'find' friends or local businesses, but also learn about the location of particular events.
Meanwhile, going by the information on the Mixer Labs 'About' page, the company has listed seven employees. The Mixer Labs co-founder and chief executive, Elad Gil, is a well-known Google and McKinsey veteran, who claims to have co-founded Google's Mobile team.
