Estimates show surge of PlayStation 3 sales in Japan due to the launch of Final Fantasy XIII. The last week’s launch of “Final Fantasy XIII” special edition, offered by Sony, gives the PS3 its best week since a re-launch several months ago.
In the week of Dec. 14, the PS3 the total sales were 237,086 units, out of which about 92,000 units were a "Final Fantasy XIII" special edition of Sony's PS3, said Media Create. FFXIII launched on Dec. 17 covered the figures in its first four days of sale.
The re-launch gave a new lease of life to the PlayStation 3, which recorded high the sales over the past three months. The FFXIII software got a major success for Square Enix with sales of over
1.5 million copies in its first four days. In addition, as the game is only available for the PS3 in Japan, everyone expecting FFXIII to fetch even high PS3 sales once it is launched everywhere.
In the most recent Media Create statistics, Joystiq cited that FFXIII has topped the 1.5 million mark (1,501,964), which is more than double the life-to-date totals of the next-closest PS3 title in terms of sales (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots) in four days.
