A New Jersey supermarket - Greenwich ShopRite denied Heath and Deborah Campbell a request for a birthday cake frosted with the name Adolf Hitler Campbell, which happens to be the name of their 3-year old son. They feel it is not too much to ask for tolerance and are upset not only with the Greenwich ShopRite, but also with the outpouring of angry Internet postings in response to a local newspaper article over the weekend.
They feel a new president should drive home the point that it’s time for a change; and that people need to accept a name, as a name is a name and a kid named Hitler is not going to grow up to be Hitler.
According to Deborah Campbell, 25, she phoned ShopRite last week to place her order for a cake and was asked for her son’s name to be spelt out. When she did, she was told to talk to a supervisor, who denied the request.
Karen Meleta, a spokeswoman for ShopRite says the store has also previously denied similar requests from the Campbells in the last two years, as on one occasion Heath Campbell had asked the cake be decorated with a swastika, as well, which the store considered inappropriate.
According to Heath Campbel, they ultimately got the cake decorated at Walmart, and about 12 people attended the birthday party, including several mixed race children. ‘If we're so racist, then why would I have them come into my home?’ he asked.
The Campbells have also given their other two children unusual names e.g. JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell (almost 2) and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell (almost 1).
Heath Campbell, genuinely surprised about all the controversy, explains why his son was named after Adolf Hitler, because he not only liked the name, but also ‘no one else in the world would have that name.’ With German ancestors, Campbell says he has lived his entire life in Hunterdon County.
Though he was raised not to avoid people of other races, he was told that social or romantic mixing was taboo. However, he wants to raise his children differently, and if his son grows up and hangs out with black people, he’s okay with it.
