The very popular tourist attraction almost did not happen this year. The re-enactment of the Trek across the Delaware into New Jersey happens each Christmas to commemorate the famous crossing by George Washington 233 years ago. Boats ferried nearly 2,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 18 cannons across the river, after which, the troops marched 8 miles downriver and fell on Hessian mercenaries in the streets of Trenton. The victory electrified the struggling nation and led to further military successes in Trenton and Princeton.
Due to the budget cuts this year, this trek was almost a no-show. However, the enthusiasm of the local public and companies has resulted in a huge donation by technology manufacturer, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co., of Newtown, Pa. to the tune of $ 400,000 for Washington Crossing Historical Park. The VP and GM of Lockheed, Marshall Byrd has further promised volunteer support, for maintenance of the park, from all employees for the next 5 years.
This year was also good for the re-enactment with the weather holding out unlike the last few years. Additional money was raised with the auction of a prime seat in the lead boat. Home builder, Thomas Fischer, won it at the price of $ 3500.
