Population of New Hampshire Outraces Maine

Latest official figures released by the Census Bureau have confirmed that for the first time in about 209 years, the population of New Hampshire has managed to exceed that of Maine. Both the states have nearly 1.3 million residents, and new figures released Wednesday have estimated that New Hampshire's population is plus 6,274 people.

According to Demographer Kenneth Johnson at the University of New Hampshire, the state has been growing much faster than Maine for almost a decade now, adding 89,000 new residents since the year 2000, as compared to Maine's addition of 43,000.

Also, Maine has more of elderly population, and therefore more death and fewer births as compared to New Hampshire.

Recently, however, New Hampshire's growth has somewhat slowed down. For example, migrations from Massachusetts have slipped by 34% over the past few years.
