Airports around the country are in the process of getting a security makeover under the wing of the Transportation Security Administration after a senior US counter-terrorism official asserted that someone had tried to blow up Delta/Northwest Airlines Flight 253 with over 250 passengers aboard. The attacker was subdued just in time.
The attacker has been identified as Abdul Mudallad, a Nigerian citizen in his 20s, and US officials have shared that he was most likely acting on Al-Qaeda's behalf when he tried to bomb the flight on Friday which was on route from Amsterdam to Detroit.
According to one US intelligence official, the supposed explosive was a mix of powder and water, and it failed with the attacker tried to detonate it.
The plane was swept efficiently by bomb squads for any more explosives, but how the passenger managed to get the mix on board is still a mystery.
The attempted attack has managed to put airports across all states on high alert, and security is now the top priority everywhere. The TSA, however, has refused to share any details on what the improved security measures would be, if any.
