Christmas Morning Turned Miserable for Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant Stores

The Christmas Eve turned to be a misery for the several stores, restaurants and artist spaces at the Kingsway-and-Broadway hipster hub of Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood after a fire engulfed the area.

The fire broke out at about 2 a. m. in a heritage area of central Vancouver for several hours. In accordance to Assistant Chief Wade Pierlot, the fire initiated from a nutrition store, before spreading to the building's second floor. However, no loss of life or any injuries have been reported.

Among the burned out commercial suites, several art studios were the hard hit causing a huge loss of precious artifacts and landing many owners in shock.

The older and affordable storefront spaces in the area were speculated to be vulnerable after the initial fire and Friday's fire proved it right.

The fire came just 6 weeks after another fire which destroyed the popular Slickety Jim's Chat 'N' Chew and burned five other businesses to ground in early November. Investigators haven't yet determined the cause, and the earlier fire was declared accidental.

Gary Sarai, the Vancouver Fire Department battalion chief, said that the blaze was very hard to control because the building was old and appeared to have no sprinkler system.
