For the year 2009, mobile social networking stole all the focus and dominated the mobile web usage. In all, access to social networking websites accounted for almost 50% of the total usage across US. As per mobile software applications and infrastructure provider Openwave Systems' October 2009 Mobile Insights report, out of the top 10 web domains accessed via mobile devices in the country, 4 were social networking sites.
The results posted by Openwave Systems are in line with the recent findings revealed by the Internet Advertising Bureau, which showed a 179% year-on-year hike in the number of mobile devices accessing social media websites. The PC versions of these sites, however, saw a mere 10% increase.
Facebook has continued to rule the social networking sites, at least in the US where the portal is now the second most accessed site after Google. Also, Twitter, the popular micro-blogging website which has literally exploded in popularity, is among the most accessed sites.
With more and more people on the move, and the introduction of state of the art smartphones with enhanced social media capabilities, the figures are bound to go up.
"Social media and travel are a perfect fit, because they both are built around this idea of sharing experiences and storytelling. Content, whether that's a blog post about your favorite restaurant or the story from your latest trip to Greece and photos of that trip, is a form of social currency that you share with other people who frequent your social media space", said Mary Madden, a Senior Researcher at the Pew Internet and American Life Project in Washington.
