Volvo has released pictures and details of its new S60 concept car - resembling a coupe with four doors – which will probably be introduced at the 2009 North American International Auto Show next month, hinting at being due in 2010.
Despite the Swedish brand’s drive to become sportier, some standard concept car cues in the S60 concept include a center stack handmade out of some kind of crystal; LED headlights; and no B-pillar.
With some nice European curves on a four-door sedan, the next S60 will ride on the same platform as the new Volvo XC60 crossover, though smaller than the S80. Volvo says it will also be better engineered and better equipped to compete with the Mercedes-Benz C-class, Audi A4 and BMW X6 – models that have tweaked the traditional sedan in recent years to appeal to younger buyers looking for a sportier ride.
Though the engine is not designed for racing performance, the aim is low emissions and high mileage. It is a 1.6-liter turbocharged direct-injection four cylinder making 180 horsepower. Volvo touts the low CO2 emissions figure of 119 grams per kilometer.
A dual-clutch transmission gives the gas-saving benefits of a manual with the convenience of automatic shifting. The concept car even includes an eco drive mode, which limits the number of electric and electro-mechanical parts running, thereby saving energy for the drivetrain.
Stephen Odell, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars, said: “The driving properties are better than in any previous Volvo. The car’s technology will also help you to be a better and safer driver.”
