Greyhound racing at Raynham Park to end from January 1

Greyhound Racing

Saturday marked the last day for greyhound racing at Raynham Park in Massachusetts as the greyhound racing will become illegal from January 1, 2010.

Earlier in November 2008, voters in Massachusetts passed a referendum to ban dog racing, showing concerns over animal protection issues.

But, the decision will definitely throw many out of work.

Speaking on the issue, a depressed worker at Raynham Park Jimmy Fortunato said, “I guess I'm unemployed and a little bit too early to be retired, but I don't think I have an option so I don't know -- I'm just going to play it by ear.”

Apart from workers at the park, dog owners will also be affected. In addition, fans of greyhound racing will lose a favorite pastime.
