Harmful Immune Cells in the Arteries to be Targeted by Heart Study

Scientists from all over the world have planned to make a separate team that will only target to develop a treatment for the harmful immune cells in the arteries, which are supposed to be the major cause of maximum heart attacks. British Heart Foundation is also supporting them.

Treatment developed for inflammation in the arteries, which also results in an attack, have not been effective so far.

The Bristol Heart institute said that this may be due the fact that the medicine destroys both harmful as well as helpful cells. Plaques formed in the arteries tend to break, forming the blood clot which can lead to heart attack.

The research, costing £750,000, will be aiming at preserving the helpful and modifying the harmful immune cells, thus preventing fatty acids to become unstable.

The team will comprise of the researchers from Bristol, France, Sweden and the Netherlands and they will test the effectiveness of combination of both conventional drugs and new treatments in lowering the immune system response in the arteries of infected patients.

The study may take its base from research carried out at Imperial College London.

Every day, more than 300 people die due to heart attacks and this number further increases on the Eve of Christmas and New Year.
