Man Booked for Stealing Plane

Frederick police arrested a man early Monday morning, and he was charged with theft, burglary and trespassing. The police believe that the arrested Calvin Craig Cox, 51, had stolen the single- engine Piper Super Club plane from an airport hangar without the owner's authorization and later crashed it.

The pilot lost control over the plane and crashed it into a grassy area near one of the runways at Frederick Airport just after 2 a. m. Monday. Witnesses claimed that the pilot fled from the area soon after the incident.

Police eventually got hold of the pilot early Monday morning near the airport and arrested him. Cox was not hurt during the crash, which apparently happened while the plane was taxiing or attempting to take off. However, plane's fuselage and propeller was damaged.

Police revealed that they are unknown to the fact that why Cox stole the plane, but believed that he had a plan to leave the Frederick area. However, during the ongoing investigation police learned that Cox is familiar with the airplanes, though a check of pilot license records did not indicate that he was certified.

Local officials are still investigating the incident with the help of the FBI.
