Pomegranate helpful in combating MRSA, superbugs

Referring to the superfood fruit scientists discovered that pomegranate can fight hospital superbugs if combined with vitamin C and metal salts.

The scientists at the University of Kingston, Surrey, created the strong, infection-busting compound by combining the fruit's rind with other natural products.

Declan Naughton, professor of biomolecular sciences at Kingston, described, "It was the mix that fantastically increased the activity. There was synergy, where the combined effects were much greater than those exhibited by individual components. It shows nature still has a few tricks up its sleeve."

Earlier findings claim that the fruit’s juice can help protect against a range of ailments, from heart disease to male impotence.

Other scientists while pointing out to tests said they were limited to laboratories and a lot was needed for using it on humans.

Anthony Coates, professor of medical microbiology at St George's in London, added that it was helpful to discover a new antibiotic.

The same scientists who discovered that pomegranate rind could counter MRSA also discovered that white tea could help prevent cancer and heart disease.
