The Hearst Corporation spin-off Skiff announced on Monday that it will introduce its large format Skiff e-reader at the Las Vegas CES event to be held later this week. Skiff, which will launch the e-reader in association with Sprint, also released the details of its forthcoming device as well as its pictures on Monday.
The team-up with Sprint will allow Skiff to provide 3G wireless service for its e-reader, which will boast an 11.5-inch full touchscreen display - the largest thus far in the e-reader market - and 1200
-by-1600 pixels UXGA resolution.
Though the device will initially be available in a black and white display, Skiff is working "aggressively" on a firmware update that will bring color to the screen in the near future.
Talking about the Skiff Reader, which will be available in Sprint retail stores as well as online, Skiff's president Gil Fuchsberg said: "We think it's the speediest reader yet. We've got some things that we can do that you've never been able to do on e-ink screens before."
Noting that Skiff is also working towards a market for dedicated readers, besides applications for phones and tablet PCs, Fuchsberg added that the company store will also sell newspapers, magazines and e-books - from multiple publishers - which will be "uniquely optimized for wireless delivery to devices and delivery via the Web."
