Facebook cuts off Suicide Machine access

The late December-launched Web 2.0 Suicide Machine service, which allows online social-media users to ‘kill’ their social networking accounts “forever,” has henceforth been denied access to by Facebook. However, access to the service is still available from Twitter, MySpace, and LinkedIn.

The ‘Suicide Machine’ - which is a creation of Moddr, “your ‘unfriendly’ neighborhood medialab” located in Rotterdam - pitches on its site: “Tired of your Social Network? Liberate your newbie friends with a Web2.0 suicide! This machine lets you delete all your energy-sucking social-networking profiles, kill your fake virtual friends, and completely do away with your Web2.0 alter ego.”

Elaborating the reason behind the Facebook decision to shut down access to the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine, a Facebook representative said that for users who wish to ‘sign out forever,’ Facebook has the options of either account deactivation or account deletion. The representative added that the ‘machine’ “collects log-in credentials and scrapes Facebook pages,” thereby violating Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.

Noting that the Suicide Machine apparently walks through the targeted accounts, friend by friend, and deletes users’ connections one at a time through a script, the Facebook representative said that the social networking site is investigating the situation before taking any further action.

Meanwhile, the Suicide Machine Web site has stated that it is exploring ways “to circumvent this ungrounded restriction” that Facebook has imposed on it service.
