The engagement of Drew Peterson, 54, and former Bolingbrook police sergeant who is a suspect in his wife's disappearance, sparked a range of reactions from disbelief to revulsion.
Not surprising as Stacy, 23, his fourth wife disappeared in October 2007. His third wife, Kathleen Savio, was found drowned in a bathtub, and her death has since been re-classified a homicide. Surprisingly, Peterson has again not been charged in this case, either.
Protesting their privacy would be jeopardize, Peterson has declined to reveal the name of his fiancée, who is just one of the six women he has dated since the disappearance of his wife. Tired of media attention, Peterson says he wouldn't invite reporters to his wedding, as they would only ruin the occasion. However, he does tell us, his fiancée is a former fan, who revealed herself through hand-written letters and describes her as 'very attractive', 'svelte', and at 23, a year younger than Stacy Peterson, who would have turned 24 this year. His fiancée who lives about 15-minutes from his Bolingbrook, Ill. home, has been introduced to his two children.
However, Stacy Peterson's family is 'shocked' to hear of Peterson's engagement, with Pamela Bosco, spokesperson for the family saying: 'We were shocked when we first heard, but then when we thought it through we weren't at all surprised. This is obviously a pattern we've seen with Peterson.' Stacy's family believes there is an ulterior motive behind Peterson's public announcement of his engagement. Perhaps, it's something to do with a book deal or his legal position, but it definitely doesn't have anything to do with love. Asked whether they believe his would-be bride might be in danger, Bosco says: 'If history repeats itself then I'd say this is not a good situation for her to be in.'
Drew Peterson, who joked about his wife's disappearance in October 2007, attracted media attention due to his blasé attitude, even alleging that his wife's PMS had led her to run off with another man. The case remains open and is under investigation, though in an interview with ABC news last year, Peterson said the search for Stacy Peterson was a 'waste of time.'
Drew Peterson, who is still legally married to Stacy Peterson, will require a divorce before he can walk down the aisle with his mystery bride. According to the Chicago Tribune, Drew Peterson has already met with a high-profile divorce attorney for getting a divorce on the grounds of abandonment.
