Motorola announces its third Android-based smartphone – ‘Backflip’

The recent AT&T Developer Summit witnessed Motorola officially announcing its third Android-based smartphone – the Motoblur-equipped ‘Backflip’ which boasts a unique industrial design.

Featuring a reverse flip QWERTY keyboard and a touchpad behind its 3.1-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display, the Android 1.5-powered Motorola Backflip will be launched in the first quarter this year in the U. S., Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

Though Motorola is yet to announce its carrier partners, the fact that the US version of the Backflip supports WCDMA 850/1900/2100MHz bands, and GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz bands, it is more than likely that the phone will come to the AT&T network in the US.

With the Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha hinting at a “unique form factor” and one-of-its-kind design of the Backflip, it is worth noting that the clamshell phone actually features a ‘twist’ that gives users additional control over the viewing angle of the phone’s display while still maintaining easy accessibility to the keyboard.

The other notable features of the forthcoming Motorola Backflip include a 32 GB of expandable memory; 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and an LED flash; video capture; 802.11b/g WiFi; GPS; a 3.5-mm headphone jack; and the full Android HTML browser.

Featuring Motorola’s cloud-based Motoblur user interface, the Backflip will have a 1400 mAh battery, which, as per Motorola claims, will give the users up to 6 hours of usage time.
