Ban proposed for pre-9pm ban on alcohol TV ads

MPs of a committee have unanimously proposed to put a ban on any advertisement shown before 9pm on TV, billboards or posters close to schools and on social networking websites.

The House of Commons submitted a report in which they argue that restrictions on alcohol advertising are not stringent enough and that the “problem is the quantity of advertising rather than the promotion.”

The lack of public health advertising messages was criticized by the committee and they initiated the thought that 20% of TV ads by alcohol advertisers should be dedicated to health messages.

The committee made suggestions that alcoholic advertisements should not be done using any form of medium if the readership or audience comprises of 10% people who are under 18.

The report demanded significant upheaval in the rules and regulations of marketing alcoholic beverages. It said that alcohol advertising should also be banned on social networking sites.

The committee said, “The regulation of alcohol promotion should be completely independent of the alcohol and advertising industries. This would match the best practice in other fields such as financial services and professional conduct.”
