Basildon University Hospital in Essex has two confirmed patients of Legionnaires’ disease. Both these patients were suspected of having contracted an illness following which the tests were conducted over the weekend.
The Chief Executive of the hospital, Alan Whittle said that the most probable source of the disease was the hospital itself. He suggested this after testing water samples from the hospital.
Alan said that both the patients were put on antibiotics and have responded too. However, the condition of one patient is still critical. Apart from these two cases no more people have been suspected of the same disease.
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by the bacteria legionella and is significantly fatal.
“We routinely and regularly treat and check the water system and independent audits are carried out to ensure our processes are rigorous. Experts agree that the legionella bacterium is a common risk in large buildings with an extensive plumbing system,” said Mr. Whittle.
He added that they have not been able to completely remove the bacteria but have worked hard to minimize its risk.
