Google to roll out a new file-uploading feature for Google Docs

Google is introducing a new feature for its Google Docs which will facilitate the process of uploading of the users’ files from their desktops to the cloud, chiefly for the purpose of collaboration and sharing.

A recent post on the Official Google Blog has revealed that the new feature will be gradually rolled out to all Google Docs users over the coming few weeks.

However, rather than being any kind of immediate replacement for Dropbox shares, the new feature is essentially an addition to the Web version of Google Docs, and not a desktop syncing solution.

According to the information forwarded by Google, the new feature is part of the company’s endeavor to bring Google Docs more in line with Dropbox and Microsoft’s SkyDrive, even though these products are not direct competitors as of now.

Using this feature, existing Google Docs’ users will get a free upload up to 1GB worth of files to the service, and, more importantly, in any conceivable file format. While the maximum file size per file is 250MB, users can also purchase more than 1GB of total storage space, if required.

As such, the underlying idea behind the new feature is that it will not only allow easier file transfers between computers, but will also enable more cloud-based collaboration between users, supporting even those file formats that cannot be opened with Google Docs itself.
