SciClone Claims Adjuvant Zadaxin Manages to Raise H1N1 Vaccine Immune Response

Drug manufacturing company SciClone Pharmaceuticals Inc., has shared that its adjuvant Zadaxin, when administered in combination with Novartis' H1N1 vaccine, can effectively manage to boost immune response, making the drug even more effective.

On the new, shares of SciClone soared by as much as 14%.

By definition, an adjuvant is an agent that increases the immune-system response, which means that less of active ingredients need to be used in each dose.

When given with the H1N1 medicine, Zadaxin managed to give a significant hike to the percentage of subjects who "seroconverted" at about 21 days post vaccination, as compared to those who received the drug alone, as was confirmed by SciClone.

Chief Executive of SciClone Friedhelm Blobel has stressed that he has been much encouraged by the results of the study, which, for the first time ever, ended up utilizing less-frequent shots of Zadaxin at higher doses.

"We believe the rapid achievement of full enrollment in this study indicates the need for safe and effective vaccine enhancers to help protect immune compromised and elderly patients from H1N1 influenza," said the company's partner Sigma-Tau R&D's Director Trevor Jones.
